Petros Koumoutsakos holds the Herbert S. Winokur, Jr. Professorship in Computational Science and Engineering and serves as Dean of the School of Applied Mathematics at Harvard University. He studied Naval Architecture (Diploma, National Technical University of Athens, 1986; M.Sc., University of Michigan, 1987), Aeronautics (M.Sc., California Institute of Technology, 1988), and holds a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Applied Mathematics (Caltech, 1992). He conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University, served as a permanent research scientist at NASA, and held the Chair of Computational Science at ETH Zurich from 2000 to 2020. He has been a visiting professor at several universities, including the University of Tokyo, MIT, Technical University of Munich, TU Berlin, Université Grenoble Alpes, and Sorbonne Université (Paris VI).
He is an elected International Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of multiple professional societies, including SIAM, ASME, and APS. He led the team that received the Gordon Bell Prize in high-performance computing (the first such award for Europe) and has been awarded an Advanced Grant by the European Research Council (ERC).
His research focuses on the development of methods in Computational Science and Artificial Intelligence, as well as Fluid Mechanics, with applications in aerodynamics, biology, and nanotechnology.
