The Biotechnology Sector is Reshaping the Social Narrative

The biotechnology sector is at the forefront of an era characterized as the revolution of Biology. It is attracting global attention with the possibilities it offers for transforming the economy.

With significant progress in many areas ranging from gene editing to protein and cell therapies, biotechnology is reshaping the social narrative of health, food, and the life expectancy of populations. Market forecasts show an impressive growth trajectory, with the global biotechnology market expected to triple by 2030, driven by a strong compound annual growth rate of 12.8%.

Komvos, with the major sponsorship of Piraeus Bank, has already begun a series of actions. In the biotechnology sector, in collaboration with the BIO³ conference organized by Bioinnovation, it is implementing, for the second year, the biotechnology conference titled “Synergy Structures of Health-Biotechnology-Economy.”

Komvos’ operations are supported by the accounting company Ecovis-Onetax.

Health Biotechnology

Health-related biotechnology is expected to reach $713.3 billion by 2027, fueled by the increase in chronic diseases and trends in personalized medicine. Recognizing these opportunities, many countries are establishing specialized hubs under the name “Science Parks” to promote innovation and investment. Despite past failures in this sector, Greece is re-examining the concept of science parks in the context of leveraging the rich human resources of Greek scientists and its well-established educational system.

The presence of significant Greeks in key positions of global significance in health sciences and biotechnology allows the country to compete for the possibility of becoming one of the future leaders in this field. However, challenges remain, such as institutional constraints and the need to align with international standards. Drawing knowledge from successful models such as the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina (with 10 million residents), Greece can aim to promote innovation in biotechnology to make it one of the central pillars of economic development. These parks offer tax incentives and infrastructure to attract research institutions and biotechnology companies, catalyzing regional development and creating a talent hub.

The Initiative

The non-profit civil partenership KOMVOS-NODE of Greece and the Institute for the Promotion of Research and Education in the Arts, Sciences, and Technology (ARISTEiA) in the United States are collaborating to conduct a feasibility study for the requirements and conditions for the successful implementation of a Health and Life Sciences Industry, Research, and Education Park, as well as the impact that the creation of such a structure would have in Greece. The main objectives of this initiative are:

To identify the health and life science themes where Greece has a competitive advantage.
To determine the optimal course of implementation and development.
To study the best practices of similar initiatives in other countries.
To explore areas in Greece that offer opportunities for the development of such a park, which would include biotechnology factories, healthcare units, research centers, and technical education organizations in biotechnology.
To assess the impact of the initiative on the economy at both local and national levels.
To enhance Greece’s capacity in education, research, and innovation in the medical and biomedical industries, thereby increasing employment.
To provide opportunities for Greece’s youth and create new investment opportunities.

As part of the actions with this perspective, KOMVOS and the ARISTEiA Institute have established the organization of a workshop within the BIO³ conference, organized by the Bioinnovation Greece organization. After the successful completion of the first conference in September 2023, the second conference will be held on September 5, 2024, titled “Synergy Structures of Health-Biotechnology-Economy – Part 2: Do we agree that they are needed in Greece? Next Steps?”
