Many countries have established structures that combine health, biotechnology, and the economy. These structures bring together biotechnology and life sciences with healthcare services and the pharmaceutical industry, utilizing high-quality scientific knowledge and creating opportunities for investments in new product development and new applications.
Such structures offer specific incentives for the establishment of public and private research centers, hospitals, large biotechnology industries, and startup companies with a scientific focus, facilitating synergy between research and industry.
The development of these structures in Greece is still in its early stages, if not at the planning stage. Many Greek scientists of global renown are involved in such organizations abroad. Despite the delay in developing these models in Greece, there is still potential for the country to become a leading node for sectors that have experienced rapid growth in recent years.
Scientific Potential Quality
The high ratio of scientific talent quality to labor costs in Greece enhances the return on investment in this field. At the same time, in the post-financial crisis era in Greece (2010–2020), investing in the next generation of Greek scientists will raise their average income, reduce the need for emigration, and create a two-way flow of scientists between Greece and foreign countries, thereby reversing the “brain drain” into a “brain gain.”
These topics will be discussed during the Round Table organized under the auspices of the Non-Profit Civil Partenership “KOMVOS-NODE: Networks of Global Hellenism” on September 18, 2023, 4:00-7:30 pm at the Technopolis of Athens. The event is titled: “Health-Biotechnology and Economy Synergy Structures: Research Institutes, Hospitals, Biotechnology Parks, Industry”. The panel of speakers includes renowned scientists and key figures from the economy and investment sectors.
The event is sponsored by DEMO ABEE pharamceutics. This sponsorship significantly contributes to achieving the goals of Komvos-Node, especially since the company is in the process of creating the biotechnology pharmaceutical manufacturing sector in Greece from scratch. It is, in fact, the first company in Greece to engage in biotechnology, with the establishment of a modern Biotechnology Research Center.
The discussion will take place at the “Miltiadis Evert” amphitheater in the Technopolis of Athens (Pireos 100, 11854, Gazi, Athens). The event is open to the public with free entry, and access will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
This event is a satellite session of the BIO³ International Forum on Biomedicine, Bioinformatics & Biotechnology: Fostering Collaboration in Industry & Academia, which is also being held at the Technopolis of Athens from September 15-17, 2023.
