Angelos Chaniotis is a Professor of Ancient History and Classical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

His research is dedicated to ancient inscriptions, historical memory, religion, theatricality in public life, emotion and society in the Hellenistic world, and the Roman East. He has been a professor at the Universities of New York, Heidelberg, and Oxford and is a visiting professor at Northeastern Normal University in China.

He served as Vice-Rector at the University of Heidelberg and has been a member of various councils, including the Comitato Nazionale dei Garanti per la Ricerca in Italy and the Research Council of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

He is currently a member of the National Authority for Higher Education in Greece. He is an external member of the Academies of Athens, Heidelberg, and Finland, a member of the European Academy, and an honorary doctor of several universities.

He has received numerous awards, including the Knight Commander of the Order of the Phoenix from the Hellenic Republic.
