Nikos Kyrpides is a bioscientist who studies the origin of life, information processing, bioinformatics, microbiology, metagenomics, and microbiome science.

He is a researcher at the Berkeley National Laboratory, head of the Prokaryotic Organisms Superprogram, and leads the Microbiome Data Science program at the Department of Energy’s Genomics Institute. He led the development of pioneering data management systems in microbial genomics and metagenomics. These include data management systems and project oversight systems related to genomes, such as the Genomes OnLine Database (GOLD), as well as comparative genomics systems like ERGO and Integrated Microbial Genomes (IMG).
