How Resilient are Greek Households Economically? A Speech by G. Panos

How Resilient are Greek Households Economically and How Much are They Affected by the Financial Stress of the Greek Economy? This topic, along with the need for financial literacy among Greek households, was discussed by Professor Giorgos Panos during an event organized by Komvos with the sponsorship of Accenture.

The event was organized by Professor Michael Haliassos, Vice Chairman of the Board of Komvos. The presentation was made by journalist Anna Grimani.

The event took place in the Hermes Hall of the Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBEA) in the center of Athens.

Professor George Panos is a Professor of Finance at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an Honorary Professor of Finance at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow, where he worked for the previous 10 years.

He has held previous positions at the Universities of Stirling and Essex. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Aberdeen (2010), a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Warwick (2004), and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, with distinction, from the University of Ioannina (2002). He has worked as a consultant for the World Bank for a total of seven years, advising on financial issues, private sector development, entrepreneurship, and poverty reduction.

He has collaborated on financial literacy enhancement programs for the World Bank in developing countries. His research on financial management, household financial education, and the development of new skills has led to the achievement of significant research programs funded by the European Union, such as the PROFIT program (2016-2019: €1.6 million) and the TRAILS program (2024-2027: €3 million).

He is an Associate Editor of the international scientific journal European Journal of Finance, and a member of the editorial boards of the international journals Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal and Journal of General Management. In April 2020, he was named one of the best 40 MBA professors under 40 globally by the American organization Poets & Quants, which ranks global MBA programs.

His current and ongoing unpublished studies on personal finance, financial management, financial technology, financial literacy, and their connection to a new domestic economy, as well as financial and social exclusion, play a crucial role in shaping these high-priority policy, education, and practice agendas.
