Partnership Between Biomedical Research and the Pharmaceutical Industry: Greece’s Role in the Future

In an article published in the “The N Society” section of Naftemporiki, and as part of Komvos’ collaboration with the newspaper under the title “NODE OF IDEAS– GREECE 2025–2040”, founding member of Komvos Nikos Ktistakis highlights the urgent need for deeper collaboration between basic biomedical research and the pharmaceutical industry as a strategic priority for Greece’s future.

The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines clearly demonstrated how deep scientific knowledge and applied pharmaceutical innovation can come together to deliver solutions of global significance. Yet in Greece, despite the country’s strong research talent pool, the necessary institutional and financial framework to support such synergies is still lacking.

The article outlines several practical proposals — such as enhancing cooperation between universities and industry, streamlining internship procedures, and leveraging the Greek scientific diaspora — that could serve as the foundation for a sustainable and dynamic innovation ecosystem in the country.
