Komvos–Node: Networks of Global Hellenism, a Major Initiative by 108 Distinguished Individuals
“Komvos-Node: Networks of Global Hellenism” is the name of the non-profit organization founded by a group of 108 distinguished members of Hellenism, after years of preparation.
The primary motivation for the creation of Komvos-Node was the recognition of the need to establish a non-partisan, reliable platform for the development of a consensual national strategy with the active participation of the Greek diaspora. The emphasis will be on formulating innovative proposals with developmental and geostrategic content that promote the international presence and influence of Hellenism. This goal will be achieved through the creation of ad hoc networks of global Hellenism and their cooperation with other suitable international or national networks to promote common actions.
Members of Komvos-Node include prominent Greeks from both the diaspora and Greece, from major universities and research institutions, the Governor of the Bank of Greece, the President, General Secretary, and distinguished members of the Academy of Athens, Chairpersons of bank boards, honorary and active diplomats, internationally renowned entrepreneurs, Chairpersons and General Directors of reputable think tanks, and senior officials of international organizations.
The Board of Directors of Komvos-Node consists of Mr. Giannis Papanikolaou (President), Angelos Chaniotis (Vice President), Nikiforos Diamantouros (General Secretary), Christoforos Sardelis (Treasurer), Chrysa Kouveliotou, Vasilis Ntziahristos, Spyros Pappas, Giorgos Provopoulos, Vicky Pryce, Michalis Chaliasos, and Giorgos Chrousos.
The organization is preparing a series of proposals for initiatives with a particular regional focus. Some examples include the creation of a green maritime technology park, the promotion of Greece as a regional energy and transport hub, connecting Thessaloniki with the Danube, promoting Piraeus as the maritime capital of the EU, establishing a Green Classification Society, utilizing the International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia in collaboration with the IOC, enhancing Greek participation in the creation of international governance mechanisms (Global Governance), and designing a new institutional architecture for the EU.
Additionally, initiatives are planned related to health, with a focus on biotechnology and mental health, empowering households in their financial behavior, creating a database of distinguished Greeks both abroad and living in Greece, and organizing a large annual gathering dedicated to broader Hellenism.
These initiatives will be presented before the end of the year, at a meeting among Komvos-Node’s members and friends (which is scheduled to take place in Nafplio – unless unforeseen circumstances arise), in memory of the recently deceased board member, Odysseas Kyriakopoulos. The final selection of initiatives will take place then, once it is confirmed that they align with the official priorities of the country and can form the basis of broader national consensus.
The President of the Board, economist Giannis Papanikolaou, stated: “The pandemic, the reshaping of the international European and regional environment, which has become even more unpredictable with the crisis in Ukraine, and the socio-economic problems of the last decade that have surpassed any previous record, make it imperative for Greece to develop a new medium-to-long-term plan.” As historian Angelos Chaniotis – Vice President of the organization, explains, “Any serious attempt to find effective solutions necessitates the activation and mobilization of all forces of Hellenism.” Mr. Papadopoulos also stated: “Despite the problems Greece faces, it possesses significant potential, being a global superpower in culture, shipping, and the diaspora, which together form a powerful peaceful advantage.”
Since its very beginning and for the past eight years, the effort has been supported by the late former President of the Republic – Karolos Papoulias, who was one of the three Honorary Presidents of the initiative group. The other two included former President of the Republic – Mr. Prokopis Pavlopoulos, and former Prime Minister – Mr. Loukas Papadimos, who remain Honorary Presidents of Komvos-Node to this day.
