The recent conference on biotechnology synergy structures, held under the initiative of the Hub in collaboration with the ARISTEiA Institute of the USA, highlighted several critical issues related to the development of the research and innovation sector in Greece. One of the most important conclusions is the need for greater collaboration between the public sector, universities, and private entities. The existence of structures that facilitate this collaboration is essential, and the creation of such structures is the goal of this initiative by Komvos-Node. Tax incentives for the establishment and operation of innovative businesses and research centers are critical for the success of the entire endeavor.
Motives and Stability
Beyond tax incentives, political, economic, and social stability are essential conditions for the success of such endeavors. It was emphasized that the long-term sustainability of structures and investments depends on these stable conditions, as these structures do not yield immediate results but require time to show their impact.
Another important issue raised was the strengthening of the entrepreneurial mindset in the younger generation. Promoting entrepreneurial thinking and accepting risk as part of the process are necessary elements for the evolution of Greek entrepreneurship.
A significant point was also made regarding the need to support basic research in Greece. While there are funding mechanisms, such as the clawback for pharmaceutical companies, a large portion of funds is not directed towards basic research, limiting development. It was also noted that while many funding tools are available, the processes are complex and require better management at both the government and European Union levels.
A Labyrinthine Landscape of Support Programs for Biotechnology Synergy Structures
European programs such as Horizon, EIC, InvestEU, the European Investment Bank (EIB), as well as national programs with or without EU support, such as the Cohesion Fund, the NSRF, the Development Fund, the “Research and Innovation” program, research funds managed by the Regions, and the Clawback mechanism previously mentioned, create a labyrinthine landscape that entrepreneurs and scientists often find difficult to understand and utilize.
Finally, the opportunity presented by the return of talented Greeks from abroad was highlighted. With the right support, this “brain return” could significantly strengthen the structures and development of innovation in Greece.
