Dr. Sotirios Theofanis is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of Ports, Freight Transport, and Logistics.

His career is characterized by a unique combination of practical experience and academic presence. He has served as Chairman and CEO of the Port of Piraeus Authority (2002-2004) and Chairman and CEO of the Port of Thessaloniki Authority (1999-2002 & 2018-2020), leading their introduction to the Athens Stock Exchange. He is currently a Professor of Practice and Director of the Master’s Program in Shipping and Port Management at City College, University of York Europe Campus, a Senior Research Partner at SEERC, Thessaloniki, Academic Director of the Port Senior Management Programme at GIMI, Israel, and a Senior Research Partner at the Center for Transportation and Infrastructure (CAIT) at Rutgers State University, NJ, USA. Until recently (May 2025), he was a member of the “Standing Committee on Marine Environment”, and was recently appointed as a member of the “Standing Committee on Port Operations and Infrastructure” (AW011) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NAS) in the United States.
