George Mitakides is a Visiting Professor at the University of Southampton, Adjunct Professor at the European University of Cyprus, and President of the Digital Enlightenment Forum.

He has served as a Full Professor at the University of Patras and Director of the European research program ESPRIT (European Strategic Program for Information Technologies). He is a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and an honorary member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences.

He has made significant contributions to the establishment of important agreements between the EU and the US, including the creation of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 1993. His interests include the human-centered development of digital technologies and their regulatory framework, the use of Artificial Intelligence for Cybersecurity, and the digital training of youth.
