Nektarios Tavernarakis is a member and, since 2022, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

He is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), Director of Research at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB), and Professor of Systems Molecular Biology at the Medical School of the University of Crete in Heraklion. He is the Director of the Master’s Program in Bioinformatics at the Medical School of the University of Crete and also leads the Neurogenetics and Aging Laboratory at IMBB.

He is a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens, a member and Vice President of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC), a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina), the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and Academia Europaea. He has also served as Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
