Hercules Haralmbides has been a professor of economics since 1992. He has taught at 9 universities in 7 different countries, primarily at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Sorbonne, National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Management University (SMU), and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He also holds the Chair of ‘Distinguished Professor’ of Maritime Economics and Ports at Dalian Maritime University in China.

He is the founder of the Erasmus Center for Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL) and the scientific journal Maritime Economics & Logistics (MEL), which has been published for the last 26 years. He has authored over 400 scientific articles, books, etc., in the broader field of shipping, ports, supply chains, and geopolitics. According to the Elsevier, Scopus, and Web of Science FWCI index, Professor Charalambides is the top maritime economist in the world with an FWCI of 4.5.

He has advised governments, international organizations, and the private sector, and for several years, he worked closely with the then EU Commissioner for Transport, Neil Kinnock. Finally, from 2011 to 2015, alongside his academic duties, he was in charge of the management of the Italian port of Brindisi. In 2008, he was awarded a medal by the President of the Hellenic Republic.
