Sustainable tourism is no longer merely a strategic differentiation choice; it has become a prerequisite for resilience and long-term prosperity for Greek destinations. With this perspective, the Lightning Talk “Tourism and Sustainability: Sustainability as Transition and a New Approach to Leadership” was held within the framework of the 3rd Annual Conference of Komvos.
Sustainability as Transition and Leadership
The discussion was moderated by Elizabeth Filippouli, journalist, author, social entrepreneur, founder of the Global Thinkers Forum, and founding member of Komvos. Sustainability was highlighted not only as a technical management tool but as a profound political and social choice: a transition to a new development paradigm and a new approach to leadership that places responsibility, collaboration, and measurable progress at its core.
The discussant was Eleni Andreadis, Sustainability Director, author, and educator, who emphasized that sustainability is not limited to environmental interventions but extends horizontally across education, the local economy, visitor behavior, and the very identity of the destination. Integrating ESG principles into tourism planning, fostering environmental awareness from an early age, and strengthening local participation are critical pillars for meaningful change.
A welcoming address was also delivered by Anna Karamanli, Deputy Minister of Tourism, highlighting the importance of collaboration among the State, local authorities, and civil society to accelerate the transition toward sustainable tourism.
The “Tourism and Sustainability” Initiative
Within the panel, Komvos presented its “Tourism and Sustainability” initiative, which focuses on:
the protection and empowerment of small and vulnerable destinations,
managing visitor flows according to carrying capacity,
connecting tourism with local production, gastronomy, and culture,
highlighting and preserving the natural environment as a key development asset.
The initiative aims to create a framework that transforms isolated best practices into a coherent strategy capable of supporting destinations over the long term.
Sustainable Tourism Honorary Mentions
A highlight of the session was the awarding of honorary mentions to organizations that have already demonstrated that sustainability can be put into practice:
The first honorary mention was presented by Angelos Chaniotis, founding member and Chair of the Komvos Board of Directors, Professor of Ancient History and Classical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, to the Municipality of Tilos, for its energy transition and journey toward energy autonomy through innovative renewable energy solutions.
The second honorary mention was presented by Eleni Andreadis to the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF), for its systematic support of local environmental protection initiatives across the Cyclades islands.
The third honorary mention was presented by Anna Karamanli, Deputy Minister of Tourism, to the Municipality of Astypalaia, for green mobility initiatives and the integration of sustainability into the island’s development strategy.
The honorary mentions were designed by Leonie Yagdjoglou, whom Komvos warmly thanks for her creative contribution.
Voices of the Protagonists
During the presentation of the honorary mentions, representatives of the awarded organizations shared the vision and challenges behind their initiatives, highlighting that sustainability is not a slogan, but a daily responsibility.
Michalis Koumbios, representative of the Municipality of Tilos, receiving the award for the “two-syllable miracle” of the Aegean, emphasized the need for islands to move away from the monoculture of tourism. He stressed that we must protect each place’s landscape and microclimate, investing in education, health, and proper resource management before these are permanently lost.
Ioannis Koutoudis, Head of Funding and Program Development at the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF), noted that in the environmental realm, sustainability means operating a business without depleting natural resources. For CPF, financial sustainability and environmental protection are two sides of the same coin — and this is the dialogue they aim to strengthen across the Cyclades.
Nikolaos Komineas, Mayor of the Municipality of Astypalaia, explained the Astypalaia model, where sustainability translates into concrete actions: clean drinking water, biological wastewater treatment for irrigation, full recycling, and electric mobility. “Small islands can become replicable examples of how the planet can become sustainable,” he noted, advocating a model of gentle and resilient development.
Next Steps: Toward a Sustainable Tourism Manifesto
The next milestone is the development of a Sustainable Tourism Manifesto, in collaboration with the Komvos Advisory Committee on Sustainable Tourism. The Manifesto aims to serve as both a practical and values-based reference framework, with clear progress indicators, policy recommendations, and implementation tools for destinations.
In parallel, a dedicated workshop is planned for 2026, aiming to broaden the dialogue and foster strong local and international partnerships.
The transition to a sustainable model of tourism development is not the responsibility of a single organization or island. It is a collective endeavor that requires leadership, collaboration, and consistency. Komvos seeks to make a meaningful contribution to this transition, enabling Greece to take a leading role in a new, resilient, and equitable tourism model.
