Science, Technology, and Space Industry
Within the framework of the 3rd Annual Working Conference of Komvos, the session “Science, Technology, and Space Industry” highlighted Greece’s active presence in the space sector and the importance of investing in human capital for the next generation of scientists. Komvos’ initiative aims to establish a Space Knowledge, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Hub, leveraging the International Network of Greek Space Scientists.
The session was moderated by Anna Grimani, journalist, author, and founding member of Komvos, and featured presentations by Dr. Stamatios Krimigis, Emeritus Director of NASA space programs and former President of the Academy of Athens, also a founding member of Komvos, as well as a contribution from Adrianos Golemis, Chief Mission Medical Officer at ESA, the first Greek selected in the European program for new astronauts, and Corresponding Member of Komvos.
Stamatios Krimigis highlighted, using examples from Mars, Venus, and the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn, the critical importance of water as a fundamental prerequisite for life and presented recent discoveries that reinforce the scientific certainty that life is not a unique phenomenon in the Universe. He also emphasized the rapid growth of the space economy, from satellite communications to Earth observation and navigation, with significant social and economic impact.
His reference to the Hellenic Space Center showcased the implementation of a national satellite program, funded by the Recovery Fund, aiming for a full fleet of Earth observation satellites by 2026. The technologies developed for space research are now being applied in disaster management, environmental protection, civil security, and the monitoring of borders and maritime areas. At the same time, the development of domestic infrastructure and collaboration with Greek companies is creating employment opportunities across a wide range of sectors.
Through his intervention, Adrianos Golemis emphasized the importance of activating human capital through European and international programs, outlining the pathways for young scientists: starting via European routes, achieving excellence through international centers, and fostering interest from an early school age. As highlighted, Greece has entered the space economy dynamically, with opportunities for scientific, educational, and geopolitical advancement, despite challenges in securing long-term funding.
The session highlighted that Greece’s participation in space is not a luxury, but a strategic investment with broad social, economic, and educational impact. Through its Space Initiative, Komvos fosters the connection between science, technology, and industry, strengthening the Greek ecosystem and inspiring the next generation to envision Greece at the forefront of the international space community.
