Distinguished professor of Transplant Surgery, Andreas Tzakis, became the newest member of the Academy of Athens on Tuesday, May 17, 2022. The welcoming ceremony was broadcast live on the website of the Academy of Athens. 

Professor Tzakis, who is also a founding member of Komvos-Node, delivered a speech during the ceremony on the topic of “Transplants in Greece in 2022.” 

The professor was introduced by Scholar Mr. Roussos, in the presence of the President of the Academy of Athens, Mr. Anonios Regakos, and the General Secretary, Mr. Christos Zerefos. It should be noted that both Mr. Règakos and Mr. Zerefos are also members of Komvos-Node. 

Multivisceral Transplantation

Professor Tzakis is a member of 21 scientific medical societies worldwide. He has an extensive body of written work and research projects, and has received numerous international awards and distinctions. Among his many scientific achievements, one of his most notable accomplishments was the first multivisceral transplantation (liver, stomach, pancreas, small and large intestines, and two kidneys) performed in 1997 on a 10-month-old girl! Another significant achievement was the transplantation of a uterus from a deceased donor. In fact, in 2019, the first baby was born from a uterus transplanted using this method. 

Within Greece, Professor Tzakis is the one who started the kidney transplant program at the University of Patras 20 years ago. The list of his scientific achievements is extensive. A brief biography can be found on Komvos-Node’s website.
